Six of the toughest Strava segments on this year’s Vuelta a Espana route

Big climbs, stunning settings and King of the Mountains titles up for grabs

Stage 16 concludes atop La Farrapona, a brutal 16.5-kilometre slog up the category-one climb.

A demanding section on the lower slopes of the climb sets the tone, before – after a number of false flats – the road ramps skywards for the final five kilometres.

The gradients for the final section are well in excess of eight per cent, including sections reaching well into double figures.

The Alto La Farropona Strava segment, which includes an additional two kilometres at the start, has an elevation difference of more than 1,000 metres.

Having been tackled just 41 times by Strava users, it could well be a King of the Mountains title there for the taking – at least until the pros arrive.

Luxembourg-based user Simon Donne’s mark has stood for more than five years – his estimated power output of 260 watts seeing him take 1:05:45 to reach the summit.
