The Roubaix sportive has been a bit hit or miss over the past few years depending on whether they actually let you into the velodrome at the finish or, indeed, the legendary showers.
However, with a change of organiser (with ASO replaced by the group behind the Tour of Flanders sportive) they’ve recognised that it’s a winning formula and all part of the authentic Roubaix experience.
Being able to finish on the velodrome and taking a shower in the same historic showers as the heroes of the sport is pretty unique in cycling, let alone other sports.
Crossing the line I collapsed into one of La Fuga’s finest fold-up chairs, necked a few recovery beers in Cancellara style then headed for the showers… it must have been fate that the free cubicle I ran into was Fabian’s. Cue obligatory selfie, channelling my one quarter Swiss heritage and doing my best impression of the big guy. Game over, job done, successful day all round. Sign me up for next year.
