A sportive is not a race – it’s what you want to make it. That may mean testing yourself over an ‘epic’ course that will earn serious bragging rights, cruising around a local event with a group of mates, or anything in between.
You’ve paid to be there so enjoy the experience. Of course, you may suffer at some point in the ride but that goes for anyone, whether they’re an experienced cyclist or a sportive debutant. Push yourself but not to the extent that you’ve lost a sense of why you’re there. Oh, and if you are going to showboat, try not to fall off in front of the photographer…
Chance are you’ll cross the finish line with a huge sense of self-satisfaction and will be planning your next event before you even get home.
