With your kit and spares sorted, next on the list is to make sure you remember your nutrition. Generally two water bottles for the bike and one bottle for recovery is recommended. This way you can keep one flavour for each of your on-the-bike bottles, and another for your recovery drink, and that keeps them separate without mixing one flavour with the residues of another – which probably isn’t the taste you’re seeking as soon as you’ve finished a hard ride.
Preparing a separate musette that can be tucked into your kit bag with bars, gels, fruit, energy powder and any other tried-and-tested items will form a good routine to ensure that you don’t forget anything, along with any ‘real’ food that you may need afterwards to replenish your stores. A bottle of water is always good to have on hand and can be used to mix up a recovery drink or to drink plain depending on how you’re feeling.
