Clovelly, Devon
Clovelly, Devon
On the topic of wall-like ascents in south west England, Clovelly in Devon serves up another thigh-numbing ascent.
The village is accessed by a fully cobbled hill but, while that is not accessible by bike, a tarmaced service road can be tackled on two wheels.
Less than half-a-kilometre in total, the singletrack road has a rough, heavy surface and kicks up immediately with a gradient of 20 per cent. The brutal opening section of the climb then makes way for an even fiercer second half where the gradient has been measured at close to 30 per cent.
If you are a fan of the steep stuff, the south west is certainly the place to be.
