How to travel by air with your bike

Step-by-step guide to make sure your pride and joy arrives in one piece

Tools for the job

Aside from your normal tool kit for riding, the list for prepping your bike needn’t be long as most bikes these days only require a few Allen key sizes to do basic adjustments and remove most components.

A friendly local bike shop should be able to provide frame protectors to slot into the dropouts (Pic: Colin Dennis)
  • A good quality set of Allen keys (multi-tools are ok but a longer reaching set of keys works better, especially for the rear derailleur and removal of pedals)
  • Pedal spanner (depending on how the pedals are secured you may need only the correct fitting Allen key)
  • Zip-ties (for steerer tube only)
  • Electrical tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Rags
  • Cardboard
  • Frame protectors
  • Seatpost bung
  • Protective tubular bike packaging

With all that to hand, you’re ready to start prepping your bike for travel.
