The gathering gloom

There’s always a ride at this time of year where I get caught out.

A quick spin after work to log a few miles which ends as dusk falls, or, on this occasion, an evening commute in the gathering gloom after unexpectedly staying late at work. Cars have begun to turn on their headlights but there’s just enough light left in the low sun to make the short ride home safely.

The change in the season this year has seemed starker than most. Almost as soon as August turned to September, a nip appeared in the morning air and the days quickly grew shorter. We may only have entered September but winter is on its way.

It’s time for an annual event which falls upon all cyclists – time to fit lights to the bike, or at least carry the compact, silicon lights which are so handy for urban commuting until something more substantial is required.

Autumn has announced itself and there’s no excuse for being caught out again.
