We brought you news yesterday that Shimano had updated their top-tier Dura-Ace mechanical groupset, moving it to 11-speed for 2013.
Now here’s a look at the overhaul of the flagship Dura-Ace Di2 electronic groupset for the 11-speed configuration that will become the standard for model year 2013: the 9070 series.
Much of this kit was displayed on our recent trip to Belgium (the C75 wheel above, for example), but other items, including the aero shaped, pivot mounted brake pictured below is new to us. Here’s a break down of the components.
E-tubes
E-tubesThe wiring system has been updated: enter the E tube, which will be instantly recognised by users of Ultegra Di2 who’ve had this slimmer, two core wiring from the get-go.
Rear derailleur
The rear derailleur accommodates the 11-speed standard, and with it a 28-tooth sprocket. Shimano say the compact body has yielded weight savings over its predecessor. Another device compatible with the E-tube connection system.
Front Derailleur
The front derailleur features an automatic trim mechanism to eliminate chain rub when shifting with the rear derailleur. The mech is another component connected with the E-tube.
Battery/accessories
Two versions of the lithium-ion battery will be offered with the 9070 groupset, including one that can be concealed in the frame; ideally in the seat tube from Shimano’s point of view. They claim a cycle of up to 2000km between charges. Junction units will be available in three and five port configurations. The five port comes with wireless functionality.
An interface to configure and customise the settings is available, a very powerful tool which will allow the user to programme the number of shifts attained from pressing and holding the lever; a significant step forward from the one-at-a-time, press per shift system of its predecessor.
Dual control lever
The dual control lever is one of three shifters available, suitable for drop bars and the base bar of a TT set up. Additionally, two satellite shifters are available for mounting on aero bar extensions.
Aero brake caliper
We rode the new 9000 series mechanical groupset last month, but Shimano were unable to show us the aero version of their new direct mount caliper. Here it is. It mounts to the frame by its pivot points and has a notably shorter actuation arm than its sister model for aerodynamic efficiency.
Computer
Programming your shifters from an on-board computer has the feel of science fiction, but hats off to Shimano for this wireless computer that tracks your performance as well as your components, via an optional heart rate monitor and speed sensor, and by ANT+ compatibility with third party power meters and speed sensors.
Wheelsets
A 75mm deep carbon rim has been added to the Shimano wheel range. As might be expected for a wheel of this application, its tubular only. Sixteen bladed spokes are mounted in the front wheel, and 21 in the rear.
