On Sunday (August 4), one week after the Anniversary Games were held at the Olympic Stadium, cycling’s legacy event will see 25,000 amateur riders roll out on a course inspired by the Olympic road race just hours before some of  the world’s top professionals take to the same roads.

And fans will be able to get a close-up glimpse of star riders including Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and David Millar (Garmin-Sharp)in this free event.

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, part of the Mayor of London’s new cycling festival, rolls out of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and fans can get up close to the team buses, see riders sign-on, watch the race depart and then follow it live on a big screen.

It is the first free event to take place in the Park since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will also offer a vast array of bike-based activities for visitors to try their hand at.

With the Lee Valley VeloPark also soon to reopen on the site, London Legacy Development Corporation Chief Executive Dennis Hone, hopes the Olympic Park will become a source of inspiration for cyclists.

He said: “The Prudential RideLondon Festival will be a fantastic event. We are looking forward to welcoming professional and amateur cyclists and fans back to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to help recapture the spirit of 2012.

“[The Lee Valley VeloPark] is set to be a world-class cycling venue with track, BMX, road and mountain biking. I have no doubt it will help inspire the next generation of Chris Hoys, Bradley Wiggins’ and Sarah Storeys.

“We are on track to deliver a fantastic sporting and destination and a great legacy for East London.”

The inaugural running of the 140-mile RideLondon-Surrey Classic will see 150 of the world’s top male professionals race through to Box Hill and circuits of Leith Hill in Surrey before finishing back in central London on the Mall.

Of the 25 teams taking part, eight competed in this month’s Tour de France with back-to-back green jersey winner Sagan topping the bill.

They will be joined on the start line by Britain’s top pro-continental teams, including Team Raleigh, UK Youth Team, Rapha-Condor JLT and IG Sigma Sport.

Attractions at the Park will include live BMX shows by Team Extreme, wandering entertainers on bikes and the opportunity to view demonstrations of bike polo, before trying it out themselves.

There will also be the opportunity to try out many different types of bikes, including handcycles and horizontal posture cycles while younger attendees can play with a range of giant games.

Bike experts at Dr Bike will also be on hand to sort out problems from squeaky brakes, to unshifting gears, wobbly wheels and even faulty bells and there will be ‘have-a-go’ sessions in basketball, handball and other sports at the Copper Box.

The RideLondon Festival will begin at 11am, with the race set to start at 12.45pm.
