Sportive season is in full swing and there are more events than ever where you can test your mettle, from grueling 100-mile rides in the hills to sedate spins around country lanes in Kent.

It takes all sorts to make a sportive, but there are certain personality types that you will come across at every event this summer.

From the guy who doesn’t want to ride with anyone else and then complains when he can’t follow the signposted route, to the fella pushing 60 who is still dishing out the pain to kids a third of his age.
