La Marmotte heads to the Pyrenees for new 2016 event

Iconic European sportive expands to tackle famous Pyrenean climbs like the Tourmalet

One of the original and toughest European sportives, La Marmotte, is heading to the Pyrenees in 2016 after the launch of the Marmotte Pyrenees.

Known for tackling some of the Alps’ most demanding and most iconic climbs, La Marmotte has become a must-ride event for cyclists across the world, and now that same blend of classic Tour de France climbs and rewarding routes will be packed into its new sibling.

The inaugural Marmottes Pyrenees will roll out of Argeles-Gazost on August 28, on the Bank Holiday weekend, and tackle two ascents of the Col du Tourmalet, peaking at 2,115m.

Sandwiched in between are the Hourquette d’Ancizan and Col d’Aspin, before the 160km sportive climbs up to Luz Ardiden for the finale.

It all adds up to 5,600m of elevation – some 600m more climbing than the fearsome Andorran stage of last year’s Vuelta a Espana.

An expo and pasta party then concludes events in Luz Saint Sauveur after what is likely to be a hugely popular ride.

Tempted? The newly launched Sportive Breaks are an official partner of Marmotte Pyrenees and have hotel rooms in Luz Saint Sauveur and sportive entries for £249 per person.
