Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins wound the clock back to claim gold in the Madison as Great Britain topped the medal table at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
Cavendish finished sixth in the six-event omnium – won by defending champion and former road team-mate Fernando Gaviria (Colombia) – to deal a blow to his hopes of competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
But the Manxman paired up with Wiggins for the Championships’ final event, and overcame a late crash to replicate the gold medal they won in Manchester in 2008.
Despite being a lap down early on, the Brits racked up the sprint victories leaving them only needing to gain a lap themselves to take a provisional lead.
And after repeated attempts by Wiggins to force the advantage, they did exactly that – a late crash for Cavendish failing to stop the Manxman collecting his third gold medal in the discipline, having also won with Rob Hayles in LA in 2005.
