Ed Clancy could target the team sprint at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Clancy, 27, is already a double gold medalist with the team pursuit squad, part of a line-up that won gold in Beijing with Bradley Wiggins, and which successfully defended their Olympic title in London.
And the Yorkshireman, who also won bronze in the omnium two weeks ago, has not ruled out competing at the 2020 Games.
“I really want to go to Rio and perhaps even the one after. I’m perhaps getting a bit ahead of myself, but yeah Rio, for sure,” he said.
With Geraint Thomas, Clancy has been the backbone of Great Britain’s men’s team pursuit squad for eight years and two consecutive Games.
He competed in Beijing as part of a squad undefeated in all competitions for two years, and in a changed line up that arrived at London 2012 as reigning world champions and world record holders.
Now Clancy will seek a new challenge for Rio, and with Sir Chris Hoy on record as “99.9 per cent” sure that he won’t contest a fifth Games, he is not ruling out a move to the team sprint.
Clancy and Team GB will wait for clarification from the sport’s governing body, the UCI, on which events will be included in the Olympic schedule.
“Am I going to have a couple of years off the track and just ride the road and then get back into the team pursuit, or am I going to start looking at team sprint and team pursuit?
“Do I think I could overlap man three in team sprint and man one in team pursuit? Potentially, if the schedules line up. There are different ways of getting there, but for sure I want to go to Rio,” he said.
Clancy will ride in the Newport Nocturne on September 1. He was speaking to RCUK as an ambassador of 9Bar, a nutrition company whose products he uses.
