It was a case of second time lucky for Anthony Kappes and Craig MacLean in a gold medal-winning ride in the men’s sprint.
The British duo led home Neil Fachie and Barney Storey in an all-British final, after losing out to their team-mates on Saturday in the 1km pursuit following mechanical problems.
Defending champion, Kappes, who won the sprint title with Storey in Beijing, expressed relief after his earlier disappointment.
“You don’t get many opportunities. On Saturday we blew it. It was not our fault, still we blew it nonetheless. This was a chance to demonstrate what we can do and I can’t complain,” he said.
The British pairings had a slight collision during the final, but Storey refused to blame the coming together for he and Fachie’s defeat, insisting that it hadn’t changed the result.
There were more medals on track for Paralympics GB, courtesy of Darren Kenny, Jon-Allan Butterworth and Rik Wadden’s silver medal in the men’s team sprint, and a bronze for Aileen McGlynn and Helen Scott in the tandem pursuit.
Kenny, Butterworth and Wadden were narrowly beaten by the Chinese trio, who edged them by little more than a tenth of a second.
McGlynn and Scott won bronze in another all-British final, finishing ahead of Lora Turnham and Fiona Duncan.
