Great Britain has its second world champion of the 2012 UCI World Road Race Championships.

Lucy Garner won a second consecutive junior women’s world title by outsprinting Norway’s Eline Brustad and the Italian, Anna Stricker, to retain her rainbow jersey.

Garner’s achievement in winning back-to-back junior world road titles equals that of Nicole Cooke, who achieved the double in 2000 and 2001, and went on to win almost every major prize in women’s cycling, including the 2008 Olympic road race.

Garner said: “We trained a lot in these surroundings to get ready for the hills. Especially the Cauberg, which I could take very well.

“This win is a team effort more than anything. The lead out Elinor [Barker] gave me was fantastic.”

The hilly, 81km parcourse included five ascents of the Bemelerberg and Cauberg, brutal climbs to be faced by the senior athletes over the weekend.

Great Britain, fielding a line-up of Garner, Barker, Emily Kay, Molly Weaver and Jessie Walker, worked with Italy to set-up a bunch sprint.

“The whole team deserve this twice as much as I do,” Garner said.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better lead-out than having the world time trial champion help me. When she went to the front, none of the other teams could come past.”
