Assos airBlock.LL bib tights £151.99
As with the airJack jacket tested recently, these tights feature airBlock 851, a material with a real talent for fending off the wind. It has been placed just around the knees and upper thighs, ensuring those areas are well protected from the cold.
airBlock is a multi-layer material. The inner layer is designed to channel air away from your body, and does an impressive job of doing so – it’s really noticeable from the moment you begin riding. Assos quote a working temperature range of between zero and eight degrees, but the tights have happily gone above and below those figures without hesitation.
For freedom of movement, an essential requirement of tights, Assos have chosen to place a large oval-shaped section of thinner fabric directly behind the knee, avoiding any seams that can lead to discomfort.
Foot hoops guarantee the legs stay in place, though the hoops can be felt underneath the foot. Further up, a six-inch zip makes mid-ride hedge stops less than stressful, though there’s more than enough stretch in the Lycra on its own. The bib straps are wide and spread the load well, and the back area is filled with an open mesh to help keep you at a comfortable temperature.
Unlike many of the tights tested recently, these shun an integrated chamois and, in doing so, become far more versatile. Not only can you wear your favourite shorts underneath, but you can also get away with wearing the tights for several days at a time before they need a wash.
Available in five colours and six sizes.
Verdict
The Assos airBlock.LLs will do everything you could want a pair of tights to do. The lack of a chamois means you can get more use out of them, going someway to making the price tag easier to swallow.
airBlock material impresses again, great comfort, no chamois
We’d be hard pushed to pick any faults with them
