Thorn 130mm 5 Arm Reversible SINGLE ring – Black 3/32inch £19.95
Three months ago, five months after completing building my fixed wheel bike, I managed to fold a chain ring in half – no I’m not that strong, I was simply using a 3/32” drivetrain, which I still do. Except that the chainring was weak.
However this time I’m using an alloy Thorn single ring. It’s 5mm thick with recesses for bolts on both sides so it can be turned around. It is designed for use with standard single ring bolts and nuts.
The Thorn is stiff and very strong – which is always a huge advantage, especially if you are running single/fixed gear. Thinking of single speed fixed I also need to say that there is just a slight difference between tight and loose spots on a chain. This means the chainring is made to a high standard of roundness.
Teeth are not directional so after wearing it on one side you can simply flip it around and use the ‘untouched’ side, and there is a great news for all aesthetes – Thorn put their logo on both sides of the ring thinking of this action.
Personally I think Thorn’s chainring is a great choice to everyone who is running singlespeed bike with 3/32” drivetrain.
