Great Britain name young squad for final round of UCI Track World Cup

Sprint starlet Danni Khan among debutants in Guadalajara, Mexico

British Cycling have named a young squad for the final round of the 2013/14 UCI Track World Cup, which takes place in Guadalajara, Mexico, from January 17 to January 19.

After following success in the opening round in Manchester with another strong performance in Aguascalientes, Mexico, last month, World Championship qualification has been largely assured for many senior riders.

And British Cycling have taken the opportunity to name several World Cup debutants, including rising sprint star Danni Khan and academy aces Chris Latham, Jacob Regan and Oliver Wood.

Performance manager Shane Sutton said: “We’re in a good place in terms of qualification points for the World Championships, and this has created an opportunity for some of our younger riders to step up and compete at a World Cup.

“This will give the coaches a gauge of where the riders are at, and will provide invaluable experience for the young squad members.”

Olympic gold medallist Dani King and world and European team pursuit champion Andy Tennant provide some experience to the young squad, while Lewis Oliva, Victoria Williamson and Jon Dibben have also competed at World Cup events this season.

Scottish 20-year-old John Paul, a former junior world champion who was dropped from the academy programme last year after failing to meet performance targets, is also recalled as a ‘guest rider’.
