Since their launch in January, GWR Team/Total Bike, the Swindon based
cycle racing squad have been making their presence felt in every event
they have raced, both here in the UK and mainland Europe.

With sixteen top three placings so far this season, including victories
for Grant Bayton in the Severn Bridge Road Race, Peter Kench in the Ham
Hill Road Race near Yeovil and Ben Luckwell at the Good Friday Castle
Combe Circuit Race, the team have set high standards which their rivals
will look to emulate.

The team, supported by Scott Wilson Design Engineers & Consultants, Steele
Davis Building Contractors, META Sports Performance & Training, Total Bike
Swindon and GWR FM, recently returned from a racing trip to Belgium.
With a break in the domestic calendar Kench, Bayton and Nic Tilling took
the opportunity to compete in a Kermesse race at Bovekerke in Western
Flanders over a distance of 72 miles. The riders completed 18 laps of a
circuit through the town which was shut down to all other traffic for the
occasion. With several Belgian ex-professionals competing the team did
well to figure strongly, with Peter Kench finishing an excellent 5th,
Tilling 17th and Bayton 20th.

Currently ranked 8th in the UK, the seven strong squad have been more than
a match for many of the larger, established teams. With Grant Bayton
ranked 17th Overall Elite rider and Ben Luckwell ranked 2nd Overall First
Category rider spearheading the team, they go into the next phase of
their schedule in a strong position to continue their high profile start
to the season.

This coming weekend, Luckwell, Kench and Dan Smith make the trip to Devon
to represent the team in the Totnes two day stage race, an event where
Luckwell has excelled in previous years.

The teams’ next target is to show well in the 2006 Castle Combe Summer
Road Race Series. This is a series of fifteen races, from early May to
mid August, held Thursday evenings on the Castle Combe Motor Racing
Circuit, near Chippenham. The races, each over a distance of 30 miles,
are handicapped according to riders ability, which will make the GWR Team
task even more difficult as they may start more than a lap behind slower
riders. However, Luckwell, Kench, Bayton and Tilling have all performed
well at the circuit previously and with support from teammates Phil
Bayton, Dan and Gary Smith, they will undoubtedly play a major role
throughout the series.
