Cliff Shrubb framebuilding

Spotted outside Corridori Cycles in Drift Bridge, Epsom, was this sparking new Cliff Shrubb fixed wheeler complete with modified Rohloff rear dropouts, a spec and a price tag. Great, but so what? Fact is, Cliff retired from full-time frame building – retired full-stop – years ago having built beautiful frames for all sorts of people.

Perhaps his most famous creation was the old-school lo-pro with cow-horn handlebars on which Sean Yates first competed at the world pursuit championships and then, two decades later after his own retirement from pro bike racing, in UK domestic time trailling. One thing’s for sure; Cliff Shrubb remains one of the most revered names in UK custom framebuilding.

The importance of the price tag and spec sheet lies in the indication it gives that the maestro of the fillet brazed join is still willing to undertake commissions. There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to order a Shrubb in time for the RCUK summer training camp but he is taking orders for custom frames and is quoting eight to 10 weeks for delivery.

The frame shown uses Columbus Zona low-alloy Nivacrom steel tubes and is priced at £925 with modified Rohloff ends suitable for fixed wheel use. The same frame with conventional rear ends will cost £900 and, no doubt, other options are available. Prices do not include a fork.

Interested? Then Cliffs number is 020 8669 6601 and the best time to get him is on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings.
