The disc brake revolution is happening… slowly.
We saw plenty of disc-equipped bikes at Eurobike but the subsequent recall of SRAM’s hydraulic braking system has, for now, left Shimano’s setup as the only viable groupset for bike brands who want a high-performance, disc-equipped road bike in their range.
Still, disc brakes are coming, whether you like it or not, and the SRAM recall has only served to delay the steam train, rather than cause a permanent derailment – and the growing choice of disc-ready road wheels is further evidence of that.
Reynolds had a three-strong range of disc-specific road wheelsets to show us at Core, with the entry-level Stratus Elite Disc, mid-range Stratus Pro Disc and top-end Assault SLG Disc carbon clincher providing a range of options for early adopters.
That’s not to say rim brakes will soon be obsolete – far from it – but the key pieces in the jigsaw – disc-specific frames and forks, hydraulic braking and wheels – are coming together to make disc brakes a realistic option.
