Some of the biggest names in cycling are set to appear at this year’s Cycle Show, which opens to the public at the Birmingham NEC on Friday.
Irish legend, Sean Kelly, Olympic gold medalist, Joanna Rowsell, and Britain’s Sean Yates, who rode in cycling’s top-tier for almost an entire career, and was directeur sportif to Sir Bradley Wiggins during the latter’s historic Tour de France victory, will be among those meeting their public.
Nigel Mansell, the 1992 Formula One champion, and owner of the Tour Series-winning Team UK Youth, will be joining his road captain, Yanto Barker, fresh from the Tour of Britain.
Mountain bike stars, Tracey Moseley, and Rachael and Gee Atherton, will also be on hand to provide tips and advice to show visitors keen to get involved with cycling.
RoadCyclingUK will host the Elite Road Track, where visitors will be able to try some of the latest high-end models on a 1km outdoor circuit free of charge.
Rowsell, who won gold by setting a world record in the women’s team pursuit with team-mates Laura Trott and Dani King at the London Olympic Games, and who this year became British time trial champion, will open the show to the public at 9.30am on Saturday (28) with a live interview with ITV4’s Ned Boulting.
Kelly, winner of many of the most prestigious races in cycling, including Paris-Roubaix and the Vuelta a Espana, and four times a Tour de France green jersey champion, will take part in a ‘meet the authors’ Q&A the same day.
The Athertons will also appear on Saturday 28, taking the seminar stage at 2.15pm after hosting a tyre seminar on the Continental stand.
Sunday (29) will be the turn of Mansell to address the public, where he will discuss the cycling team’s role in the work of his UK Youth charity. His team leader, Barker, will talk about his experience competing in Britain’s biggest races.
One of the most inspiring talks looks set to come from Great Britain’s World Transplant champions, Ottilie Quince and Rich Smith, on the extraordinary challenges they’ve overcome to become world beaters. The pair will take the stage on Friday (27).
