First look: Santini H20 Epic jacket

The Santini H20 Epic is a top-end, lightweight option

Hot on the heels of our first look at Santini’s H20 bib tights comes the H20 Epic jacket, which has been put through its paces over the past two weeks.

With wind and rain a near constant feature of the British winter – and autumn and spring for that matter – a waterproof and windproof jacket is the most important addition to your wardrobe.

It’s also likely to be the most expensive – but a top-end jacket is one item of cycle clothing worth shelling out for.

The H20 Epic occupies a middle ground between an ultra-lightweight shell, not rugged enough to withstand the toughest conditions, and full-on winter warmer, where overheating is a sure-fire result.

The Epic remains a lightweight option and the outer shell is made from soft shell fabric which stood up to a heavy shower with perfect effect – the rain immediately beaded off the jacket. No questions asked – although a prolonged test will yield further results when the jacket has been through the washing machine a few times.

Aquazero fabric features across the H20 range and is used on the panels ensuring they are waterproof, while allowing for freedom of movement. Elasticated cuffs and a sealed zip, with garages, keep any stray water out of the jacket.

The jacket is, crucially, windproof, keeping out those early winter chills when given its first airing during last week’s cold snap, and, as expected from a top-end brand, breathable – although not becoming a sweaty mess relies on the rider getting their layers right.

Italian clothing – Santini’s range is hand made in Italy – is traditionally small and while the medium tights I tested were spot-on, it’s worth bearing in mind that the H20 Epic is crafted to offer a close fit and comes up a little short in the body.

The single rear zip pocket is big enough to stow a pump and valuables, while a reflective rear band, wrists and logo are in place for low light conditions.

The Santini H20 Epic, at £179.99, does not come cheap but offers a high-performance option for those who take their winter riding seriously.
