The Garmin Edge 1000 has arrived at RoadCyclingUK for review
-
The flagship Edge 1000, pictured with the Edge 810, has the biggest screen of all Garmin's computers
-
The Edge 1000's increased size means it occupies more real-estate, though an out-front mount is also supplied
-
The Edge 1000 is also Garmin's heaviest computer but it's still no heavyweight at 116g
-
A maximum of ten screens can each display up to ten data fields
-
The Edge 1000 continues to use Garmin's quarter-turn mount
1. Bigger is better?
First things first, the Edge 1000 is significantly bigger than the Edge 810 it supersedes.
The unit is slimmer but longer and wider than the previously flagship, measuring 5.8 x 11.2 x 2.0 cm and, as you’d expect, the size of the screen has been significantly increased, too, and is now 3.9 x 6.5 cm. The new size of the Edge 1000 has more in common with a smart phone than Garmin’s previous computers.
Unlike a smartphone, Garmin say the Edge 1000’s display is optimised to work with gloves and in the rain – essential for UK riding and we’ll put that to the test over the winter months ahead. All ports on the unit are sealed and the Edge 1000 is water-rated to IPX7, which should mean it’s able to withstand persistent heavy rain.
While the screen is the largest we’ve seen on a Garmin device to date, it also has the highest resolution at 240 x 400 pixels (the Edge 810, 800 and Touring units are 160 x 240 pixels) and that should improve the detail and clarity of the screen.
