Giant overhauled its top of the range bikes for 2009, releasing the new TCR Advanced SL which builds on a successful foundation with some significant new developments, while taking time to redevelop its performance-orientated Defy range.
The Defy Advanced 4 is the most affordable all-carbon Defy but nevertheless shares many of the features in the company’s flagship race bikes. The ‘Advanced Composite Technology’ frame uses a 1 1/8” to 1 1/4” headtube for a stiffer front end combined with press-fit bottom bracket bearings which allow Giant to spec a much wider bottom bracket shell.
The rest of the frame is heavily sculpted with the top tube flowing organically into the seat stays. Large box section chainstays blend into the new oversized bottom bracket shell and tapered seat tube. Into the seat tube fits an aero-profiled seat post, evidence that despite weighing a bit more and being less stiff than its race bike, the Defy is no slouch for the rider wanting to exploit the frame’s speed.
“With Defy, Giant designers and engineers have created a lighter, stiffer and more comfortable everyday bike for riders who want it all in one package,” said Dennis Lane, Giant Global Product Development Director. “Defy is designed to exceed the expectations of both devoted club riders and die-hard road racers alike.”
