Nine highlights from dhb’s new autumn/winter clothing range

Cutting-edge design and fabrics with this UK-designed kit

Clothing brand dhb has rapidly become a well-regarded choice when it comes to great value performance cycle clothing and we took a look at the firm’s spring/summer kit earlier this year. Now, with the season changing, here we have the highlights from their new range for this autumn and winter.

dhb’s kit may well be great value, but they offer more than just keen pricing. With the design team based in the UK, they have a solid understanding of the fickle nature of our climate and the frustrations it creates when deciding what to wear for your ride. dhb choose both established and well-tested materials along with cutting-edge fabrics to get the best performance from the garment – whether it’s dealing with the wind, the rain or wicking moisture from your body.

Premium fabrics are great but if the design and fit of the clothing is poor then comfort – especially on closer fitting road garments – is compromised. Here, dhb’s design team thoroughly test and evaluate new styles getting the details perfect. They work using ‘body measurement data collection’ to give the best chance of getting fit and sizing consistent and realistic. Men’s and women’s styles are available across the range.

The Rain Defence range is a new addition to the Aeron arsenal for 2016 and follows a trend within the clothing market over recent years for water resistant, performance-focussed clothing which provides protection from the elements without unduly neglecting fit or breathability. We also take a look at two new waterproof shells – the Tempo and Storm – with exceptionally good pricing for the fabrics they use.

So, without further ado, let’s take a closer look at nine of the standout highlights from dhb’s new autumn/winter clothing range.

dhb Aeron Tempo Waterproof Jacket

Whether it’s a fast paced blast in pouring rain, or having the flexibility of a high performance packable waterproof on changeable days, this lightweight shell is designed to handle whatever the weather throws your way.

The tailored fit is combined with a high performance 2.5 layer fabric to give a ‘no compromise’ lightweight road shell – this new jacket (along with the Storm) is the result of twelve months of development and testing.

The Tempo’s fabric has a slight stretch for close fitting comfort and has a waterproof rating of 20,000mm (with breathability listed at 15,000g/m²/24hrs) giving great performance. Under-arm venting and an adjustable hem let you control your temperature when working hard.

At just over 200g (size medium) the Tempo is packable and easy to carry with you in your jersey pocket, making this a waterproof jacket which treads the line well between low weight and durability.

Men’s sizes: XS – XXL, Women’s sizes: 8 – 16
Price: £80 (launched early November)

dhb Aeron Storm Waterproof Jacket

If you’re heading out on a training session in the rain then you’re likely to be in your jacket for the entire ride – often leading to discomfort. However. by using 37.5™ Technology, the new dhb Aeron Storm waterproof is designed to help keep you in your performance sweetspot. So what is 37.5™ Technology?

First of all, 37.5% is the optimum relative humidity in your microclimate for comfort and performance, while 37.5°C is the ideal core body temperature for comfort and performance.

37.5 active particle technology captures and releases moisture vapour to maintain the optimum relative humidity in your microclimate, which helps your body maintain an ideal core temperature. The result? Increased comfort and enhanced performance. Leave your jacket on for the entire ride…

The Aeron Storm uses a 2.5 layer fabric with fully taped waterproof seams and a YKK Aquaguard Vislon main zip to keep out the weather. It’s not a heavyweight jacket but at 348g (size medium) is touch bulkier than the Aeron Tempo waterproof, and offers more protection from the element. Plus it’s competitively priced for such a high-spec waterproof shell.

Men’s sizes: XS – XXL, Women’s sizes: 8 – 16
Price: £125 (available mid October)

dhb Aeron Full Protection Softshell

Is this the ultimate winter softshell? It certainly is dhb’s most advanced and protective style yet. This Aeron FP Softshell is a windproof and water resistant jacket featuring a brushed back softshell fabric to keep you insulated in cold, winter riding conditions.

With efficient breathability, a jacket like this will keep you comfortable over a broad range of temperatures with just a long sleeve base layer underneath – you’ll avoid the overheating you often get with a typical hardshell waterproof jacket.

The addition of a hidden laser-cut back vent helps to optimise airflow and, along with the quick running front zip, keeps you at the ideal temperature. You’ll also find a rear drop tail that provides welcome protection against road spray on those wetter days if you’re riding without mudguards. A silicone hem gripper and ergonomically shaped cuffs seal in the warmth and keep out the elements.

With a tailored cut and a broad range of sizes the fit of this dhb jacket will accommodate most riders comfortably. The finishing details are excellent and would normally be found on jackets at twice this price. A superb investment for a rider committed to riding through the winter regardless of weather conditions.

Men’s sizes: XS-XXL, Women’s sizes: 8 – 16
Price: £100

dhb Aeron Rain Defence Bib Tight

These are high performance bib tights designed to provide additional protection in changeable weather conditions – those typical of a UK winter.

A high-stretch, mid-weight fabric with excellent breathability allows the rider to push the pace without feeling damp and uncomfortable even at higher intensities. The details are good – a mesh back panel aiding ventilation and a minimum number of seams means fewer areas for water to seep in.

The CyTech Elastic Interface Comp HP seat pad is up there with the best. A multi-density foam core with a highly breathable and quick drying face fabric ensures great comfort over high mileage.

The Rain Defence tights are for riding when you can’t predict what the weather is going to do but need to hit the road regardless and stay comfortable. They will look to keep you warm and protected whether on a rain soaked commute or an autumn sportive, combining high breathability with added waterproofing.

Men’s sizes: XS-XXL, Women’s sizes: 8-16
Price: £90

dhb Aeron Merino Base Layer (M_37.5)

Soft and warm, the dhb Aeron Merino Base Layer utilises the natural properties of merino wool so you remain comfortable over a broad range of conditions.

Using a mid-weight, high quality and ethically produced Australian merino wool with a polyester mix for stretch, dhb have used 37.5 technology (as used on dhb’s Storm jacket) to enhance the performance even further. This 37.5 technology is said to greatly increase moisture transfer and durability – important qualities for a base layer which will see hard use from autumn through to spring. The natural odour resistant properties of merino should also keep you fresh all day.

Men’s sizes: XS-XXL, Women’s sizes: 8-16
Price: £35.00

dhb Classic Roubaix Long Sleeve Jersey

A thermal long-sleeve jersey is a versatile garment and should be a cornerstone of your winter wardrobe, whether under a shell jacket like the Tempo on a wet day or with just a base layer beneath on an autumn training ride.

dhb’s Classic Roubaix Long Sleeve Jersey is a well designed example this style of mid-weight jersey. dhb have used a warm and highly breathable brushed-back fabric to trap warm air while perspiration is transported away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable. Meanwhile, the four-way stretch nature to the fabric allows for a close fit without any compromise to comfort.

A full-length zip makes for easy ventilation and the rear pockets (three vertical pockets plus one zipped for security) give plenty of space for a lightweight packable shell and other ride essentials.

Men’s: XS-XXL, Women’s: 8-16
Price: £50

dhb Blok Diamond Softshell Roubaix Jacket

Featuring the new dhb Blok Diamond print, this warm, fleeced jacket using a wind blocking fabric to offer you a versatile garment, which is ideal for changeable UK conditions – with an added dose of style.

The combination of a warm, soft, fleecy Roubaix fabric and the Windslam technology are perfect for aerobic activity, making it the ideal jacket for all types of cool weather road riding. The wind defying Windslam fabric is kept only to the front of the garment to ensure better breathability at the rear, allowing you to stay at the right temperature for the duration of your ride.

dhb’s Windslam fabric is a highly effective windproof barrier that prevents wind from causing a chill to your core, helping you to regulate your temperature more efficiently and increasing rider comfort in colder environments. If you start warming up, a full length zip helps regulate your temperature.

A very bike-specific garment, this Softshell Roubaix jacket is great for those riders who ‘run hot’ and need weather protection on cold days without easily overheating. For the UK, this type of jacket is hard to beat in all but the coldest or wettest conditions.

Men’s sizes: XS-XXL, Women’s sizes: 8-16
Price: £70

dhb Blok Prism Lightweight Roubaix SS Jersey

This jersey shows dhb’s expertise when it comes to creating a comprehensive range of road cycling clothing. It’s a versatile jersey which features a warm, Roubaix fabric (with a soft, fleecy lining) which traps air to create a warm barrier against the chill, but made in a short sleeve style, just like a summer jersey.

This fabric is also naturally wicking with a good stretch, so comfort is high and the full length front zip helps regulate the temperature when needed. The tight weaves resists the wind (but isn’t windproof) and keeps breathability high.

Partner this with different base layers to cater for a wide temperature range – and add arm warmers which you can stow away into one of the jersey’s three rear pockets. dhb make matching warmers in the eye-catching Blok design.

As a transition piece running from summer to autumn (and back again from winter to spring) this could be ideal for riders who want lightweight clothing for fast-paced rides. A unique and forward-thinking piece from dhb.

Men’s sizes: XS-XXL, Women’s sizes: 8-16
Price: £45

dhb Classic Breton Short Sleeve Jersey

Finally, this is a sleek, form-fitting cycling jersey which features a lightweight, high-wicking polyester fabric, anti-bacterial treatment and subtle reflective details. The Classic Breton jersey is ideal as a core jersey for your cycling wardrobe, whether as a foundation piece to start the layering in winter, or with arm warmers and a gilet on an autumn day.

The lightweight polyester fabric naturally draws away excess moisture which can build up next to the skin’s surface, helping to leave you feeling drier and more comfortable. An anti-bacterial fabric treatment keeps the jersey fresh.

There are plenty of smart details, too. Three vertical drop pockets on the rear of the jersey are well placed for storage and a full YKK zip aids ventilation when the temperature rises A silicone hem gripper keeps the back of the jersey in place.  Once again. both men’s and women’s styles are available.

Men’s sizes: XS-XXL, Women’s sizes: 8-16
Price: £45
