Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra trail shoes

Sturdy, grippy and comfortable – what more do you want?
Quick-tie laces are perfect if you want to dabble in duathlon racing

You may have noticed, but we at RCUK have, for a short time only, shunned our bikes this winter and slipped on a pair of running shoes.

And judging by the response to my dummies guide, Winter training: running for cyclists, back in November, some of you have taken the same route too.

What better chance to test the Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra off-road running trainers then?

The benefits of running off-road are two-fold – it’s far easier on your body, as opposed to pounding the pavement, and you can enjoy the scenery en-route – throw in a bunch of steep climbs, descents, river crossings, fallen tress and you’ve got yourself a great workout when the weather isn’t ideal for cycling.

Salomon’s trail running line-up is extensive but, if you’re serious about diversifying your training, it’s worth investing in a top-of-the-line pair like the XA Pro 3D’s, available from Cotswold Outdoor for £90.

Dubbed as the world’s best trail running shoes, the XA Pro 3D’s are built with ample mesh which means they’re breathable, allowing your feet to breathe – and it’s quick-drying too.

XA Pro 3D’s are super comfortable once slipped on and the OrthoLite insoles provide long-term cushioning – great for an out-of-the-box solution.

A low-profile 3D advanced chassis provides top-notch stability, meaning you feel in control on slippy mud. It’s also incredibly sturdy – these trainers are going to stand the test of time.

The Contagrip sole provides tons of traction on loose gravel and damp wet trails, while it’s solid enough to protect your foot when hurdling larger rocks.

That low-profile chassis means your weight is spread across a wide and low platform and, while great for off-road, it’s not enough cushioning if road running is your bag.

These are trail shoes after all and, that said, it’s ample protection for a mile or so dash while heading to the local woods or seeking out the canal towpath and fine for an occasional road run. And if a long walk or hike is on the agenda, these are comfortable, study and light enough to see you through with ease, providing it’s not tipping down with rain.

Finally, if you’ve got more than winter training on your mind, the Quicklace system is perfect for race day, whether it’s your local off-road 10km or mad-dash duathlon.

All in all, Salomon’s XA Pro 3D’s are well-worth their reputation. Running is an ideal solution while the weather’s dark and dank and a pair of first-class trail shoes make off-road training in tricky conditions all-round fun.
