Schwalbe unveil revamped tyres

The ZX features RaceStar Triple Compound and HD Speed Guard technology

Schwalbe have unveiled their revamped Ultremo ZX and ZLX racing tyres.

According to Schwalbe, the Ultremo ZX offers 15 per cent less rolling resistance, greater puncture resistance and higher mileage, while weighing 195 grams.

The ZX, available in 11 colours, has been equipped with two technical innovations, the RaceStar Triple Compound and HD Speed Guard.

Schwalbe have put a wear-resistant, low rolling resistance compound in the centre of the tyre. In contrast, the prime requirement on the tyre shoulder is grip, while a super-fast, light-running base compound is positioned under the tyre’s centre tread.

Meanwhile, the ZLX, an out-and-out competition tyre, is for riders who demand only the fastest and do not consider puncture protection necessary, coming in at 160 grams.

“ZX is the best Ultremo yet,” said Schwalbe technician Markus Hachmeyer. “Triple rubber compounds such as RaceStar have become our trademark.

“No other bicycle tyre manufacturer can combine rubber compounds in such a precise fashion in volume production.

“The shoulder compound has great adhesion properties. It is very flexible, remaining in contact with the road surface while absorbing bumps and so does not lose traction under severe cornering.”

High Density Speed Guard has been developed with US firm Warwick Mills, which holds 14 international patents for its high density weaving processes and is a world leader in innovative, industrial textiles.

“It is the finest and densest fabric on the market. No other bicycle tyre protection belt gets anywhere near its weave density,” added Hachmeyer.

“By utilising this innovative technology for the first time it has been possible to create an ultra-light, extremely puncture resistant tyre and this latest Ultremo version with HD Speed Guard enjoys the same high-density protection as its predecessor, but with distinctly reduced rolling resistance.”

The ZX and ZLX will be available from the end of 2010.
