Shand Cycles started life in 2003 as an independent manufacturer building hand-built, custom bikes from steel – now the Scottish company has launched two production frames for 2012.
First up, the Stoater is an all-road frame constructed using Reynolds 853 tubing, which “takes its cues from the US gravel grinder and monstercross scene, but reflects the British attitude to road and trail riding,” according to Shand’s Russell Stout.
It’s designed as a go-anywhere machine, equipped with disc mounts and with enough clearance for a rack and mudguards. The optional adjustable rear dropouts provide flexibility for fitting either a Rohloff/Alfine hub, derailleur gears or going singlespeed.
Meanwhile, the Stooshie is a cyclo-cross race frame, again made from Reynolds 853, with discs mounts and “massive tyre clearance to keep things rolling on muddy race days – or longer endurance-cross style events.” Finishing options are minimal, but custom cable routing and bottle braze ons are available.
Both frames can be ordered online from www.shandcycles.com, with prices for the Stoater frame start at £1,295, while the Stooshie frame costs £1,095. Six colours (aqua blue, lichen green, burnt orange, sky grey, ivory white, midnight black) are available, with different finishing options for bottle, mudguard and rack mounts at no extra cost.
