Sportful, Italian clothing manufacturer and recent supplier to the Squadra Azzura, really have all bases covered. It is indeed one of the base layers from their comprehensive clothing line up that we feature today…

The Second Skin vest comes from Sportful’s Climate Control range and is exactly what it says it is… a skin tight garment which follows the contours of the riders’ body so closely that the insulation, wicking and comfort are second to none. The Crew Neck T shirt is pictured here but this wonder material is available in several cuts including a sleeveless version and two long sleeve designs with different necklines together with a slightly heavier fabric sold under the name Second Skin Max for cooler days. The Max range still has very similar properties as far as wicking and elasticity go but its garments are ever so slightly looser cut due to the heavier weight fabric used.

Using a seamless manufacturing process for the main body is perhaps one of the secrets to Second Skin’s comfort factor with subtle surface detail adding a quality appearance to each of the products in this range. Woven from Meryl® Skinlife microfibre which includes a silver particle element to avoid bacterial growth and hence “stinky” base layers, this vest is not only comfortable then, but hygienic too…

To be honest I have been happily using a couple of long sleeve Second Skin vests for several years but with a steadily growing number of dealers starting to carry Sportful clothing I felt I had to share the secret of this excellent product. I can vouch for their durability and during the winter months found my self using one as my first layer almost daily. Wash Second Skin product as cool as you can though to maintain their exceptional elasticity and avoid washing the white versions with anything even remotely likely to turn that nice white fabric a dingy grey unless of course, you like dingy grey underwear…

In summary the Second Skin T is a great addition to anyone’s cycling wardrobe and whilst a little heavy for warmer days (of which we have had few this year!) they are perfect as a base to be used under a short sleeve jersey with arm warmers on those cooler summer evenings.

With four very stretchy sizes available and such a wide range of variations on a theme everyone should be able to find a good fit.
