One of the most common injuries for a cyclist is road rash. If you ride a lot, you’ll almost certainly suffer the misfortune to fall off at some point, and when you come off road rash is almost inevitable.
Just in case you’re not familiar with the term, road rash is that horrible burn or grazing you get as a result of the friction caused by sliding along the road. In itself, it’s not necessarily highly serious (although that depends on how much you have. And you also need to be mindful that infection can set in because of the open wounds), but it’s incredibly uncomfortable and is both very painful and extremely awkward to treat.
As anyone who has ever had to treat an open cut knows, all sorts of dirt and grime end up in the area when you fall over. Hair also tends to end up stuck down into those cuts, and also helps to keep the dirt in. Not having hair on your legs slightly eases the painful process of removing grit and, well, hair, from the cuts and allows you to get right down to the business of treatment.
The other factor is the plaster effect. Ever pulled off a plaster from a hairy limb? Yep? Hurts like hell doesn’t it? Not having hair on your legs makes removal and reapplication of dressings easier which is definitely a bonus for all involved.
