Kristian House to make Catford Hill Climb record attempt

Rapha Condor rider Kristian House will attempt to finally break the 27 year course record at the 2010 Catford Hill Climb Classic.

The 2009 British road race champion will seek to overhaul Phil Mason’s time of 1:46.6 minutes over the 707 yard course on Yorks Hill, Kent on October 10.

Team Raleigh pro Dan Fleeman came within six tenths of Mason’s remarkable record in 2007 but will 2010 see the mark finally fall?

House will be joined by team-mates Dean Downing, Graham Briggs and Jonathan Teirnan Locke – but the quartet are not eligible for the £2,000 prize fund – while last year’s winner, Robert Gough of Chippenham and District Wheelers, returns to defend his title.

The climb, in what is the world’s oldest continuous cycle race having run since 1887, averages at 12.5 per cent but includes two lung-bursting 25 per cent stretches.

“I always liked Yorks as a hill to race up,” said eight-time winner and former record holder Max Pendleton, father of Olympic sprint champion Victoria.

“The Catford was and still is, I think, the equivalent of a South of England Hill Climb Championship.”

The race was first held on Westerham Hill and has since visited Brasted Hill, Toy’s Hill, Waller Hill and Titsey Hill, before settling at Yorks in 1935.

Entries close on October 1 – head to the Catford CC website to sign up.
