Mayor Johnson saddles up for Sky Ride

The Mayor of London’s Sky Ride will take place on the 5th of September and promises to be the biggest mass participation cycling event in the capital in 2010.

The Sky Ride will take in some of London’s most iconic landmarks and give cyclists the opportunity to enjoy and explore the capital. The free event had over 65,000 spectators last year and aims to encourage people of all ages to get out on their bikes.

It is part of a series of initiatives in London during what Mayor Boris Johnson has dubbed London’s ‘Year of Cycling’. £116m will be spent by the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) on cycling this year, as part of a cycling revolution in the capital, which includes funding for the London Cycle Hire scheme, Cycle Superhighways, training, promotion, “led” rides and education.

Said the Mayor; “Sky Ride is a fantastic event, where everyone, no matter what age or cycling ability, can experience the fun of the bike, free from interference from cars. It will be a festival of cycling celebrating the cleanest, greenest, handiest way of getting about town.

The event will be backed by celebrities including model Kelly Brook and four time Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy, who commented on the event; “Sky has a genuine opportunity to make a positive difference to people’s lives by encouraging as many people as possible to get on their bikes. I had a fantastic time at last year’s events in Glasgow and London and it was great to see so many families enjoying all the activities and having fun.”
