The Cent Cols Challenge, an event described as the ‘ultimate sportive’ which took place for the first time last summer, has gained a new title sponsor in the shape of London clothing company Rapha.
The event uniquely challenged riders in teams of four to ride 100 cols in the French Alps, and for 2010 a return to the French Alps will be joined by a sister event in the Pyrenees. RCUK sent David Arthur as part of the Rapha team along in 2009 to try and tame the mountains, and you can read his report here and here.
Looking ahead then, the Cent Cols will once again take to the French Alps but, as seems fitting with the Tour de France paying homage to the mighty Pyrenees, there will be a second Cent Cols Challenge in the Pyrenees. This group will be limited to just 25 for its inaugural running. However you can take part in just the first 50 Cols section (Perpignan to Pau) or just the 2nd 50 Cols section (Pau to Perpignan)
Organiser Phil Deeker says:
“The motivation that drove me to create the Cent Cols Challenge came from a desire to share the sense of perfection that comes about after hours in the saddle on the dramatic roads that are found in the high mountains. Rider is gradually unified with his bike through his efforts and suffering. Through it all emerges a sense of grace and extreme sensitivity to one’s body and surroundings. At such moments, the comfort of the clothes one is wearing is critical, for so many reasons.
“Rapha have always covered the latter aspect for me with perfection too. Therefore I am absolutely delighted that they have become the main sponsor of the event. Our partnership will ensure this event will give others a chance to experience the beauty of ‘ultimate cycling’ for many years to come.”
Rapha’s Simon Mottram added:
“I’ve been impressed and inspired by Phil’s exploits since we first met before his 300 cols in 30 days challenge in 2007 (wearing Rapha!).
“Phil and his Cent Cols project perfectly embody the glory and suffering that we at Rapha love about the sport. For Rapha customers I can’t think of a more engaging and motivating goal than riding 100 of the most beautiful, historic and challenging cols in the Alps or Pyrenees.
“I’m really pleased that we will be centrally involved in helping Phil build the Cent Cols in the coming years.”
