RCUK winter bike build 2012: part three – mudguards

There are many warning signs by which the bicycle connoisseur can recognise the symptoms of infatuation.

Experiencing genuine excitement while unboxing mudguards is one of the final steps on the road to bicycle obsession; a condition for which there is no known cure.

These, however, are not just any mudguards: they’re anodized aluminium beauties from Portland Design Works (PDW), with various clever design intracies that allow them to be fitted to machines with mudguard eyelets or without.

We’ve fitted them to the Kinesis TK3 frameset called in for our winter bike build, a machine with mudguard attachments.

Thanks to our friends at Paligap for sending them in.

One of the many impressive features of PDW’s Full Metal Fenders is a bracket that attaches over the brake caliper; an idea so simple you wonder why it hadn’t been thought of before

The Kinesis TK3 has mudguard eyelets, but they’re not essential for the PDWs

A clamp mounted behind the front brake caliper helps to hold the front mudguard in place…

…along with some robust stays

‘Guards in place, we just some need some rolling stock to fit beneath them.
