Mark Cavendish (Team Sky) remains third in the IG Markets Pro Cycling Index, despite abandoning Milan-San Remo.
And his Sky teammate, Bradley Wiggins, has moved up to sixth in the latest edition without racing last weekend after Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) failed to defend the sixth place he scored at last year’s La Primavera.
Simon Gerrans (GreenEDGE), winner of this year’s epic seven-hour race to the seafront at San Remo, moves to twelfth after taking his first Monument Classic victory in a race ranked ‘Tier One’ on the Index.
His GreenEDGE teammate, Matt Goss, falls 55 places after failing to defend his title at last weekend’s big race. He is now ranked 86th with 799 points.
Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) moves to ninth after finishing fourth in San Remo. In doing so, the 22-year-old sprinter becomes the youngest rider to break the Index top 10.
The Index will soon witness further change with a further three WorldTour races scheduled this week: Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco, E3 Prijs Vlaanderen–Harelbeke, and Gent-Wevelgem, all ranked ‘Tier Two’ on the Index.
Two ‘Tier Three’ races are also scheduled: Dwars door Vlaanderen, in which RCUK columnist, Matt Brammeier, will ride for Omega Pharma-QuickStep, and the Criterium International, won last year by Fränk Schleck.
The busy calendar will leave lots of riders in the Index upper echelon with places to defend, including fifth-placed Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Nissan-Trek), second at Milan-San Remo, seventh-placed Scarponi, and Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), who is currently ranked 19th.
