Innovative cycle nutrition brand Qimmiq have sent us these sample of their revamped energy gels.
Opening gels on the move can be tricky, trying to squeeze out the gloopy gel while keeping the bike under control. Qimmiq – pronounced Kimmick – have looked to combat this by producing a credit card shaped sachet, opened by squeezing it in half with one hand, with the gel popping out of the middle at the back.
We first spotted Qimmiq at the Cycle Show in Birmingham back in October, when the gels were available in 36g sachets. However, following feedback received at the show, the gel now comes in a 12g sachet.
“Because the sachet could not be resealed, and because people had spent a lot on the product, they decided to finish the whole gel anyway,” Qimmiq told us. “This often led to sickness and stomach problems, compromising the effectiveness of the gels and detracting from their overall performance – not what energy gels should be doing.”
So now they’re going for a less is more approach, although a 18g sachet is planned, and they have ruled out re-introducing 36g portions if the future demand is there. As for the gel itself, only a raspberry flavour is available at the moment, and it’s made from real fruit, vegetables and honey, delivering 7.1g of carbohydrate (of which 6.8g sugars).
You can buy them from Qimmiq’s website, priced at £23.99 for 30 sachets (about 80p each). As for our samples, we’ll report back on how they taste – and how easy they’re are to open – once we’ve been out on the bike.
