Stage 2 of the Tour of the Mediterranean, run in the afternoon following the morning’s team time trial, fell to Lampre Fondital’s Daniele Bennati, who beat Roberto Petito of Liquigas and Milram’s Igor Astarloa to the finish line after 107km of racing marred by frequent spills.
Fifth at 45 seconds in the team time trial, Lampre Fondital put both Bennati and Alessandro Ballan into a 12 man break that escaped with a few kilometers remaining. Ivan Gutierrez of Caisse d’Epargne retained the yellow jersey.
