Bournemouth's outdoor velodrome takes shape

The track will open in April (pic: British Cycling)

The Bournemouth Cycling Centre – the first outdoor velodrome to be built in the UK since 1962 – is on course to open in April 2011.

The 250m Olympic size track, jointly funded by British Cycling and Bournemouth Borough Council, is the brainchild of Alan McRae.

And McRae was awarded £1,000 at the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers annual dinner to help fund the purchase of equipment such as hire bikes, starting gates and a podium.

“This donation is extremely generous and delivers a significant vote of confidence in the project,” said McRae, a member of the Bournemouth Arrows club.

“The involvement of clubs like the Jubilee is key to achieving the centre’s aim to become a focal point for the cycling community in Bournemouth.”
