Great Britain world championship squads announced

British Cycling has announced the nine-strong team that will contest the elite men’s road race world championship in Holland on September 23.

Jon Tiernan-Locke (Endura Racing) who started today’s stage of the Tour of Britain sixth overall, is the only rider from outside of professional cycling’s elite WorldTour to make the cut.

Steve Cummings, who plies his trade for the BMC Racing squad of 2011 Tour de France champion, Cadel Evans, is the only other rider from outside of Team Sky’s ranks to be selected.

The 31-year-old, who rode for Team Sky in the 2010-11 season, won the thirteenth stage of the Vuelta a Espana earlier this month.

Defending champion, Mark Cavendish, Tour de France winner, Bradley Wiggins, and runner up, Chris Froome, are all expected inclusions.

National road race champion, Ian Stannard, national time trial champion, Alex Dowsett, world scratch race champion, Ben Swift, and Luke Rowe, winner last Sunday of stage one of the Tour of Britain, and final lead out man for Cavendish in both of the Manxman’s stage wins this week, complete the line up.

Dowsett and Froome will represent Great Britain in the men’s time trial.

Great Britain will also field a strong world championship squad for the women’s road race, led by Lizzie Armitstead and Nicole Cooke. The pair will be supported by Katie Colclough, Nikki Harris, Sharon Laws, and Emma Pooley.

Pooley will also contest the time trial, as will Wendy Houvenaghel, whose selection may ease her disappointment at being overlooked for the women’s team pursuit squad at the Olympics.

The men’s under-23 squad will comprise Josh Edmondson, Simon Yates, and Scott Thwaites, teammate of Tiernan-Locke at Endura Racing, and winner this year of two rounds of the Halfords Tour Series and three rounds of the Premier Calendar.

Lucy Garner will defend the world junior title she won last year, while the highly-rated Germain Burton has been selected for the junior men’s squad.
