Winn leads last year’s winner Russ Downing

Top International cyclist Julian Winn plans to make the Shropshire Star Newport Nocturne his final race before taking over as National Coach of Welsh Cycling. In recent years ex British Champion Winn, 32, has ridden the Olympics, World Championships and the Tour of Italy.

One week after completing the Tour of Britain, Winn will make a final attempt at winning the Nocturne (this year on 24th September) before retiring. Winn finished 3rd in 2001 and second in 2003 and also won the King of the Sprints prize in 2003.

The Abergavenny rider will be desperate to stand on the top step of the podium after his final race, but will have to contend with 2003 winner Russ Downing plus local rider Ian Holt who currently lies second in the National Circuit Series.
