Jason Kenny will represent Great Britain in the men’s individual sprint at the Olympic Games in London. 

The selection will prevent Sir Chris Hoy from defending all three of the Olympic titles he won at the Beijing Games in 2008.

Hoy has been selected for the men’s team sprint and the men’s keirin for the forthcoming Games.

He said: “While I’m obviously disappointed not to be defending all three of my 2008 Olympic titles in London, Jason thoroughly deserves this opportunity and has a great chance of success in the sprint.

“I’m now focussed entirely on the Keirin and Team Sprint and my goals for these two events haven’t changed.”

Kenny was briefly world sprint champion after Gregory Bauge of France was stripped of the 2011 title for missing an out of competition drugs test.

Kenny lost to Bauge in the semi-final of the 2012 world championships in Melbourne, Australia, in April, but earned his tilt against the Frenchman by defeating Hoy.

Performance Director, Dave Brailsford, said he had been faced with a tough decision in choosing between Kenny and Hoy for the men’s individual sprint.

“Both Chris and Jason are on great form and that made it a difficult choice but we have decided to select Jason to contest the sprint and Chris will concentrate on the Keirin. We believe this gives us the strongest team possible going into the Games,” he said.

The duo will be joined in the men’s team sprint by Philip Hindes, who delivered an impressive first lap before being disqualified for a technical infringement. Ross Edgar is reserve.

Victoria Pendleton will be Great Britain’s representative in the women’s individual sprint and the keirin. She will contest the women’s team sprint with Jess Varnish. Becky James is reserve for the team sprint.

The men’s team pursuit has been hotly contested between Great Britain and Australia since Beijing, and the team selected for London 2012 is the same five man line-up that won the world championships in April.

Similarly, the victorious women’s team pursuit line up of April will be reunited in London. Wendy Houvenaghel, a silver medalist in the women’s individual pursuit in Beijing, is again part of the quartet from whom a three-strong line-up will be selected.

Laura Trott, crowned world omnium champion in Australia, will represent Great Britain in the women’s event in London. Ed Clancy, a member of the team pursuit line-up, will represent the men.
