L'Equipe publish UCI 'Index of Suspicion'

Race winner Alberto Contador is the only rider to have tested positive during the 2010 Tour de France

Yaroslav Popovych and Carlos Barredo top a confidential UCI document leaked to French newspaper L’Equipe ranking 2010 Tour de France riders according to their doping ‘risk’.

The 198 riders are ranked from zero to ten, according to data from the biologicial passport scheme, in order for the UCI and the World Anti-Doping Agency to target ‘suspicious’ for additional testing.

Radioshack rider Popovych and QuickStep’s Barredo were the only riders to receive ten out of ten, while Dennis Menchov (Rabobank), who finished third in the 2010 Tour, scored nine.

A high ranking did not prove that a rider had taken banned substances, according to L’Equipe, while none of the riders with a high rating had tested positive. Alberto Contador remains the only rider to have tested positive during the 2010 Tour.

Race winner Contador, whose clenbuterol case is under appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, scored five, while Lance Armstrong received a four and Andy Schleck three. Fabian Cancellara was among 49 riders to score zero.

Of the British riders in last year’s Tour Jeremy Hunt, scored seven, Geraint Thomas six, Bradley Wiggins five, David Millar four, Charlie Wegelius three, Mark Cavendish and Steve Cummings two and Dan Lloyd one.

The UCI has condemned the leak, insisting the scoring system was only one tool in the fight against doping.

“The UCI has been informed that the L’Equipe newspaper was going to publish in its edition on Friday a confidential document containing the riders’ individual readings following tests carried out before the start of the 2010 Tour de France,” read a UCI statement.

“First of all, the UCI deplores that this document has come into the possession of outsiders as it is a single tool on which the anti-doping services organise their activity during the race.

“This document was reserved for the UCI and independent experts of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Such a weakness in the confidentiality is very serious and the UCI will open an inquiry to discover the origin of the leak.”
