Stage 2: Blackpool to Liverpool – Wednesday 30 August

Stage 2

Stage 2 – some tough roads ahead…

The Northwest stage of the Tour of Britain will start at The Sandcastle on Blackpool’s famous beachfront at 10:30am. Surrounding roads will be closed and we expect big crowds, so do get there early in order to bag the best spectating spot. Watch the riders get ready to start the day’s cycling.

The neutralised section of this stage will be about 10.5kms long, so the race will begin properly at about 10:45am outside the Bracewell Vet Centre near Hardhorn.
If you want to watch the first sprint of this Northwest stage, make sure you get to Pilling, near the Gales Garage, as this is where the riders will pass through at around 11:00am as they compete for the Sprint title.

The race will cross the M6 between the service station and junction 33, before riders face the first tough King of the Mountains section. Watch them climb a short section at Blow Top where the road takes a sharp right hand turn – they will be passing through here at around 11:35am. Get there early in order to get a good spot from which to spectate.
Hot on the heels of Blow Top, another King of the Mountains stage follows at around 11:50am at the ‘Wyre Way’ sign, as the race passes through the Trough of Bowland.

Riders will be grabbing a drink on the move at the feed station located at Dunsop, before heading up the hill into Waddington on the B6478 – the site of the third King of the Mountains stretch. The race will pass through here around 12:10pm. These roads will be closed to traffic from earlier in the day and are narrow, so get out on the course early if you want to spectate in this stunning part of the course.

There’s another chance to see how pro cyclists refuel on the go as riders grab a quick drink at the BAE entrance on the A59 from about 12:55am.

From here, the race heads for the coast again, and Southport is the site of the second sprint of the stage. The race will pass Pleasureland at a rate of knots from 2:00pm onwards.

Thornton hosts the third sprint of the day at about 2:30pm before the race crosses the line outside Liverpool’s Town Hall as riders celebrate completing stage two of the Tour of Britain. We’ll be expecting the winner of the stage at about 2:45pm – he’ll have completed a tough 160kms of cycling.
