Mark Cavendish, fresh from taking part in the Track World Championships last week, has added another two wins to his tally, taking stage 2 and 3 victory in the 33rd KBC-Driedaagse De Panne in Koksijde, West Flanders.
Firstly, Filippo Pozzato (Katusha) took the first stage of the three-day race following his win in the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen last weekend in a two-man breakaway.
But the talk of the race following stage 2 and stage 3, which commenced earlier today, was of Mark Cavendish’s seemingly unbeatable sprint in the final metres of the race.
In both sprints Australian Robbie McEwen finished second, who seems unable at this point in the season to match the young Brits sheer power.
Cavendish said after stage 3:
“I did it last year, I thought I could do the double again this year. Robbie was coming off my wheel, it was closer than yesterday.”
Commenting on the stage 2 victory, Columbia-Highroad team sports director Allan Peiper, said: ”It was a great win here today, but it’s not like he [Cavendish] needs any more boosts to his morale before his next big goal. He’s already doing so well.
“I know he’s really focused on Ghent-Wevelgem, and he’s also looking forward to a bit of a break which is understandable. I think he’s spent about five nights in his own bed since the start of the season!”
