GSK Routes and Rides

GSK rides

Julian Winn, Rob Hayles and friends

Top British cycling stars Julian Winn and Rob Hayles gave the GSK Routes and Rides course a trial run on Wednesday with future cycling stars from the Abergavenny Road Club, Newport Velo and Cardiff based Maindy Flyers. Double Olympic medallist Hayles and former British Road Race Champion Winn offered advice to the young cyclists as they rode part of the course in advance of Saturday’s GSK Routes and Rides event.

Starting and finishing in Bailey Park the main event will see hundreds of cyclists riding the route with friends and family. The route covers a distance of 12 miles through the beautiful rolling countryside around Abergavenny and is suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. With comprehensive marshalling and signage, refreshment and sampling stations around the route and the Bike Base bike doctor service to ensure your bike is in top condition, it couldn’t be easier to sample the new GSK route.

Rob and Julian will lead the ride and will be available to offer more advice and encourage people to rediscover the family bike ride, “I remember going on bike rides when I was a kid and having loads of fun, it’s what got me interested in cycling” explained Hayles. “The GSK Routes and Rides initiative is excellent as there are more and more people with bikes who just don’t know where to go for an enjoyable and safe bike ride.”

As well as the 12 mile route there will be a 24 mile option for riders who fancy a bit more of a challenge and for those members of the family too small to take on these rides there is the Bailey Park Lap Challenge where you can bring your bike to the park and see how many times you can ride round the course.

When this gets a little too energetic there will be a host of entertainment in the park itself including BMX and Cycle Speedway displays, bouncy castle, fairground rides, “Go-Ride” activities, the Mechanics Pit Stop and plenty of food and drink stands.

New GB team bikes get a test ride

GSK Routes and Rides is a brand new initiative from GSK Nutritional Healthcare and British Cycling to make it easier for people to have fun on their bikes. GSK and British Cycling understand that people have never been more aware of the importance of being active and staying healthy, and riding a bike is a great way to do it!

Not knowing where to find safe, family-friendly cycle routes close to home can be a real barrier to people who want to be more active. That’s why GSK has created a series of eight guides to specially designed cycling routes around the UK.

These new, family-friendly guides have been created in partnership with British Cycling to provide practical information for everyone. Three mass participation rides will take place over the summer in 2006 to launch the initiative and help bring back the family bike ride.

GSK Rides 2006:

Nottingham 25th June 2006
Wales, Abergavenny 19th August 2006
London, Twickenham and Hounslow 10th September 2006
