London to Paris Bike Ride

victory

Ever wanted to be right there in Paris when the Tour de France cyclists whizz into the French capital? Ever wanted to be more than just a spectator, to be part of it?
We can’t all be Lance Armstrong, but if you take part in the Action Medical Research London to Paris Bike Ride from 19th – 23rd July 2006, you can cycle along the Champs Elyseés just one day before the final stage of the Tour de France, and then stay to soak up the atmosphere and watch the professionals arrive along the very same streets you travelled on to finish your challenge.

Action Medical Research run the only charity bike ride timed to coincide with the finale of the famous race, and they’re always looking for new volunteers to join the team and leave their tyre tread in Paris. Cycling over 300 miles in four days, the charity has recently created a second route for cyclists due to the popularity of the event, and to accommodate all the many cyclists who come back year after year to take part.

Over the last six years, they have taken over 700 cyclists on the London to Paris Bike Ride. The routes are some of the most fascinating in Europe, taking you through beautiful valleys, historic sites, rural villages and a country crazy about cycling. You’ll make new friends, have the experience of a lifetime and help to raise funds for vital medical research across the UK.

Finish

Trevor Gilby, who has taken part in the challenge was drawn to the idea of cycling such a distance and watching the Tour De France, but as he learned more about the charity, he discovered he had a very personal reason for raising as much sponsorship as he could:

”When I looked into the work this charity does, the premature baby research really jumped out at me. My brother and I were born as identical twins, at about 16 weeks premature, each weighing just under 3lbs. Sadly my twin brother passed away after a week of fighting, and I struggled on. Had Action Medical Research been funding research into premature birth in the 1950’s then I would like to think there would be two Gilby brothers receiving their medals at the celebration meal and not just one.”

Action Medical Research is a national charity, which is dedicated to building a healthier future for everyone. The Charity is funding research into many serious diseases and conditions, including premature birth, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, osteoporosis, sickle cell disease, Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

Group

The London to Paris Bike Ride raises funds to support the charity’s Touching Tiny Lives campaign, which aims to give the most vulnerable babies in this country a better start in life. Touching Tiny Lives aims to raise £3 million to help fund a range of vital research, and the cyclists pedaling their way from London to Paris each year contribute a great deal to help the charity reach this total.
