Geraint Thomas

Geraint Howell Thomas is a Welsh racing cyclist who has achieved success on both the track and the road. Born in Cardiff in May 1986, Thomas started riding with the Maindy Flyers Cycling Club at the age of just ten. With growing success at junior level, he was asked to join the British Cycling’s Olympic Academy and it is his achievements at the Olympics and in the pursuit that have defined his career.

He joined his first professional outfit, the Recycling.co.uk team, in 2006, before moving to team Barloworld the following year. He was the youngest rider in the 2007 Tour de France, benefiting from one of the three wildcards awarded to Barloworld, and finished the competition in second-last place.

Training for and then competing in the Beijing Olympics dominated Thomas’s 2008 season. He was duly rewarded, being part of the group of riders to break the world record twice in the Team Pursuit on their way to Olympic gold. He also won in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in the same dicpline. In December of that year he was awarded an MBE for services to his sport.

Thomas joined Team Sky for the 2010 season. He won the British National Road Race Championship and put in a good performance in the Tour de France, holding the Young Riders jersey for several stages. The following year brought his first professional win at the 2011 Bayern-Rundfahrt. Thomas grabbed a second gold medal in the Team Pursuit at the London 2012 Olympics.

2013 has seen Thomas take third position as well as the Sprints classification in the Tour Down Under.
