Paracycling great Dame Sarah Storey will bid for a second Curlew Cup success when the race returns to this year’s Virgin Money Cyclone Festival of Cycling.
Storey, who won the inaugural event in 2012 before storming to four gold medals on the track at the London Paralympic Games, will lead the Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International team at this year’s event.
Scottish star Katie Archibald, who will lead her national team’s charge at the Commonwealth Games, also rides for Storey’s team and will be another prominent member of a high-class field expected on the Newcastle start line on Sunday June 22.
Storey, who will ride in support of Boot Out Breast Cancer, said: “Women’s cycling is riding high on the agenda this summer and I’m excited to be returning to the North East this summer to compete in the Curlew Cup.
“The routes take in some of the UK’s loveliest scenery and the locals are always incredibly friendly and supportive to all the professionals taking part – hopefully the crowds will be out in full force to spur me on to another victory in the race.”
The race forms part of the Virgin Money Cyclone festival and takes place ahead of the men’s Beaumont Trophy – which this year will be a UCI-classified event for the first time.
The weekend, now in its eighth year, also includes a sportive with a variety of distances on offer for all abilities and attracts more than 4,000 riders to the North East.
