John Degenkolb made history at Paris-Roubaix, becoming the first German to win the race since Josef Fischer won the race’s inaugural edition back in 1896.
On the day Sir Bradley Wiggins’ Team Sky career came to an end, Degenkolb sprinted to victory in Roubaix to add a second Monument to his palmares after last month’s Milan-San Remo triumph.
It proved – as ever – a race packed with thrills and spills, from a level crossing dissecting the peloton to an attacked-filled final 40km which ended with seven men entering the Velodrome for the sprint showdown.
